HDZ officials say party poised for election victory

The chairman of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) team for preparations for the parliamentary election, Damir Jelic, on Saturday said this party welcomed President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic's decision to call a snap parliamentary vote for 11 September and added that the HDZ was hopeful of having its leader as the new Croatian Prime Minister.

Jelic noted that after the HDZ held the election for its leader on Sunday, the party would fully turn to the preparation for the coming election for the ninth legislature.

The HDZ will elect its new leader on July 17, with a member of the European Parliament Andrej Plenkovic being the only candidate for the post.

HDZ Deputy President Milijan Brkic has written on his Facebook account that this party under the helm of the new leader (Plenkovic) will win the parliamentary vote thanks to "its vision, modesty, humbleness, dedication and  diligence".

Brkic said that the HDZ is critical of its own omissions and is also aware of its historic successes and the party is now "capable of making a step forward."
