HDZ to run with updated economic programme, says party official

Deputy chief and head of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) election campaign Ivana Maletic on Monday said that the party would be putting forward an updated economic programme for the coming election with new measures and details regarding economic growth in the country.

Maletic spoke to the press after a meeting of the party's presidency and was asked whether the HDZ would base its campaign on the IFO Institute recommendations. as it did for the November 2015 election.

"The IFO programme is an academic-research study with recommendations for Croatia and we are preparing our election platform which is based on our economic programme. The recommendations by IFO are a broader platform from which we started, just like we studied the in-depth analysis by the European Commission and that of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and our institutes and based on that we worked on our economic programme which now is one year old and needs to be updated with new measures and details that are important for economic growth in Croatia," Maletic said.

The presidency meeting discussed amendments to the party's Statute which are not intended to reduce the party leader's powers but to further democratise the party.

"The leader has their role however what we will insist upon and hope for is togetherness. We are a team, the leader has to be a little more equal among equals and we function in a joint environment," she said.

She added that HDZ was holding talks with all potential partners and that world views are important as is the economic platform which the party will insist upon.

She could not say whether there would be more than one candidate for the party's leadership and that that will be known on Wednesday at midnight.
