HNS chief in favour of new poll if PM-designate hasn't enough signatures

Leader of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) Vesna Pusic attended consultations with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on Wednesday on behalf of the Croatia Is Growing Coalition and claimed that a new election should be called for if the Patriotic Coalition and Bridge did not provide the required 76 signatures supporting the nomination of Tihomir Oreskovic for prime minister-designate.

"No-one has shown 76 signatures yet because on Tuesday the leaders of HDZ and Bridge, Tomsilav Karamarko and Bozo Petrov came to the President together when Petrov presented 15 signatures supporting him and Karamarko had 63 signatures for himself," Pusic said. She said that as far as that issue is concerned the Constitution is clear - if someone has 76 signatures supporting one person then the President can appoint that person and prime minister-designate.

If, Pusic said, Petrov and Karamarko present signatures each on their own, following this intolerable situation over the past six weeks, Croatia should go to a new election. "Whoever forms a government or parliamentary majority in that way, will have serious problems of legitimacy and authority," she said.

However, if the Patriotic Coalition and Bridge jointly present the signatures supporting Tihomir Oreskovic, then he will be named prime minister-designate and form government and a parliamentary majority.
