HNS sets ambitious goals for local elections

Croatian People's Party (HNS) official Boris Blazekovic said on Monday said that the party had launched preparations for the local election scheduled for May 2017 with the aim of getting the best possible results in large cities in which the party would present "strong candidates."

"We are aspiring to achieve good results in large cities such as Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Osijek and are very ambitious in that regard and will present strong candidates in those cities," Blazekovic told a press conference in the coastal town of Split.

Blazekovic, however, stopped short of specifying the names of the candidates, however, he confirmed that the party would nominate Anka Mrak-Taritas as the party's candidate for the mayor of Zagreb.

"We believe that with her charisma, political experience and expertise and long experience in city administration she (Mrak-Taritas) stands good chances," Blazekovic added.

Even though the it and the ruling majority have different worldviews, HNS will support every action by the incumbent government that HNS believes is in Croatia's interest, he said.

According to Blazekovic, prime minister-designate Andrej Plenkovic had introduced a precedent in Croatia when he accepted an amendment in parliament proposed by the Opposition.

That was something we haven't seen until now because amendments proposed by the Opposition, were never adopted, he underscored.

Blazekovic believes that Plenkovic's action indicates that "some new winds could be blowing in parliament and political discourse in the entire country," as this opens the opportunity for a "quality debate, decision and communication between politicians."
