HSS leader says Ustasha salute should be outlawed

Kreso Beljak, leader of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), a partner in the SDP-led People's Coalition, said on Monday that he was absolutely in favour of banning the salute "For the homeland, ready" which "does harm to Croatia in international circles."

"Franjo Tudjman was aware of that in 1991. It is sad that today some politicians who consider themselves very clever are not aware of that.

It is regrettable that we follow the example of Serbia, which has rehabilitated its fascists headed by Draza Mihailovic, rather than some western countries that have taken a clear stand regarding their own quislings," Beljak said after a delegation of his party laid a wreath and lit a candle at the grave of HSS founder Stjepan Radic at Zagreb's Mirogoj cemetery, on the occasion of the 88th anniversary of Radic's death.

Asked about the possibility that a big, post-election coalition could be formed by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the SDP (Social Democratic Party), Beljak said that anything was possible and expressed hope that the deadlock that happened after the November 2015 parliamentary election would not happen again.
