IDS says cooperation with SDP-led coalition possible

The Istrian Democratic Party (IDS) will decide on election cooperation with other political parties in the coming weeks, the party's secretary-general Giovanni Sponza said on Saturday, adding that cooperation with the coalition led by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was possible.

"A post-election coalition with the SDP is possible, as was the case in the previous election. We will discuss specific terms and conditions of our cooperation when the time comes," Sponza told Hina.

The IDS was a member of the coalition government of SDP Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic.

"The SDP is fully aware of the IDS's strength and they too are very interested in a post-election coalition. The SDP is very close to us in world-view terms and a coalition is an option if we agree on strategic projects and if we receive guarantees that Croatia will finally embark on the path of decentralisation," Sponza said.

The SDP will run in the forthcoming early parliamentary election in a coalition with the Croatian People's Party (HNS), the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) and the Croatian Pensioners' Party (HSU).

Sponza said that although the IDS shared with the HSS the interest in agricultural and rural development, the views of HSS MEP Marijana Petir and some other HSS members were "completely unacceptable to the IDS because they bring into question fundamental human and civil rights."

"We are glad that the HNS and the HSS have begun talks on the actual substance of policies, on specific projects, but we hope that as far as civilisation values are concerned the SDP will not make any concessions to conservative individuals within their coalition," Sponza said.
