Interior minister: Croatia is part of humane solution to migrant crisis

Croatia is part of a humane solution to the migration crisis and will continue to take in migrants in accordance with its commitments, Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic said in the eastern border town of Tovarnik on Friday.

Speaking at the transit refugee reception centre, recently opened near the border, Orepic praised the cooperation with the neighbouring countries, saying that Croatia was a good partner operationally and a friend in dealing with the migrant crisis.

"Croatia is a free, humane and friendly country. We have definitely become European security policy makers and stakeholders," he said.

Orepic announced that Croatian police and military personnel and FRONTEX personnel would hold an exercise in the Adriatic in early October to demonstrate Croatia's capability of protecting the Schengen area at sea as well.

He confirmed that there were attempts by migrants to cross the Croatian border illegally, adding that such migrants were being sent back to the country from which they had attempted to enter Croatia illegally.

Asked to comment on the statement by Foreign Minister Miro Kovac, that Croatia would set up wire fencing along the border if necessary, Orepic said he would not speculate about hypothetical situations, but added that no fences would be put up.

About 1,500 migrants are currently staying at three reception centres in Serbia near the border with Croatia, Orepic confirmed.
