Karamarko: Bridge has much more in common with HDZ than with SDP

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko said on Monday that his party was arranging a meeting with leaders of the Most (Bridge) party to discuss reforms and support for a government that would be formed by the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition.

"Why would Bridge choose to support someone who is the reason why they were established in the first place? It is thanks to their criticism of the SDP government over the last four years that they have won so many seats. That's why I think that Bridge has much more in common with us than with this outgoing, bad government," Karamarko told public broadcaster HTV.

Karamarko said he had spoken with Bridge leader Bozo Petrov and had agreed to meet and talk.

When asked who would be the prime minister in the new government in case the HDZ coalition reached agreement with Bridge, Karamarko said that the situation was too serious to be talking about the prime minister and cabinet ministers at this point. "As far as I understood the gentlemen from Bridge, they, just like us, do not prefer to discuss positions. We are interested in real reforms."

Asked if he was prepared to give up the post of prime minister to form the government, Karamarko reiterated that he first intended to discuss the platforms and what needed to be done and then see who would implement that.

Karamarko dismissed the possibility of forming a grand coalition with the Social Democratic Party in order to avoid being blackmailed by small parties. "I have criticised this bad government for four years, so there's no way I am going to form a coalition with them. I think Bridge follows the same logic."
