Karamarko re-activates his term as MP

The parliament's Credentials and Privileges Commission on Friday unanimously supported a request to re-activate the term of Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko as a member of Parliament.

On Wednesday Karamarko was relieved of his duties as First Deputy Prime Minister in the Tihomir Oreskovic government at his own request and the government was toppled on Thursday.

Since he tendered his resignation, under the Act on State Officials' Entitlements and Obligations, Karamarko would not be able to exercise rights that belong to state officials upon the expiry of their term.

However, he is an elected member of Parliament and if his term as a government official ends, he has the right to re-activate his previously deactivated term as a member of Parliament.

The Commission's decision is still to be confirmed by the parliament.

Speaking to reporters after consultations at the President's Office today, Karamarko said that he had told President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic that his HDZ party had a good candidate for Prime Minister-designate, that it would support him and that in the next eight days it would try to reverse the current situation in which 82 members of Parliament were in favour of parliament dissolution and continue negotiations on a parliamentary reshuffle with those MPs with whom negotiations had been launched.
