Karamarko says counties are optimal solution

First Deputy Prime Minister and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko on Wednesday commented on the insistence of the Bridge party, which together with the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition makes up the new government, on reducing the current number of counties.

"Counties are an optimal solution, there are several reasons why that is so. I am not talking about cities and municipalities. What is self-sustainable will survive and stay, and what isn't, probably won't. Rest assured that we will find the right solution," he said while answering questions from the press.

Commenting on President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic's decision to relieve her advisor Vladimir Seks of duty, Karamarko said that by doing so she had shown that she was principled.

"Her decision is good. She has shown that she is principled, which is something we, too, advocate," the HDZ leader said in a comment on Grabar-Kitarovic's decision to replace Seks over the pardon of Vanja Goldberger, an adviser to Seks while he was the speaker of parliament. Goldberger was convicted for drug abuse and illegal possession of firearms.

Karamarko also said that elections in the HDZ would be held most probably in the spring.
