Karamarko says his resignation irrevocable, won't shift responsibility

Tomislav Karamarko, who resigned as president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) on Tuesday, said after a party Presidency session that his resignation was irrevocable and that he would not shift the responsibility he had as party president to other Presidency members.

Responding to questions from the press, Karamarko said it was not yet known what his position in the HDZ would be. "At the HDZ Presidency session, we talked about my resignation, which is irrevocable."

Asked if there was talk that someone else in the Presidency should take responsibility, since the Presidency members supported his decisions, Karamarko said there was talk of that but that he, as party president, had to take responsibility because that was the right thing to do. "I will never shift the responsibility I had as party leader."

He said the Presidency concluded that in the current situation, the HDZ should "close ranks because the party ahs to win" the next election. "We approached the whole situation rationally. This is all normal in politics."

He wished the HDZ unity, a democratic election of a new president, and a convincing victory in the early parliamentary polls in September. He said the Presidency did not discuss a new candidate for party president.

Karamarko posted about his resignation on his Facebook account too, saying he wants to encourage the party to find new solutions and to continue to prove that it was and remains a victorious party. "I wish my successors success and to work on building a better Croatia without compromise, motivated by nothing other than love for it. Our country deserves the best," he wrote.
