Komadina says Karamarko is threatening PM Oreskovic

Zlatko Komadina who is running for president of the strongest Opposition party, the Social Democrats (SDP), on Tuesday accused the president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Tomislav Karamarko, of directly threatening Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic, saying that one of his first moves if elected SDP chief would be talking to the junior party in the coalition government -- Bridge.

"We will talks with similar left and centre-left parties and we will also talk to Bridge," Komadina said at his campaign rally ahead of the SDP intra-party election, scheduled for Saturday.

Asked if this meant that he no longer believed that a change in the government was possible without new elections, Komadina said: "Never says never in politics."

"I still believe the most honourable thing to do is to return the mandate to citizens, but never say never in politics. I never heard anyone threaten the incumbent prime minister. Bridge needs to be encouraged not to agree to HDZ's manipulations and threats," Komadina said.

HDZ chief and First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic still enjoyed the support of the strongest parliamentary party, underscoring however, that if Oreskovic were to lose the support he would no longer be prime minister. Komadina described this as a direct threat to the prime minister. "I've never seen anyone make threats like this against the prime minister. Parties like these must go back to being in the Opposition," Komadina said.
