Last year 183,905 doses of blood donated

Last year 183,905 doses of blood were collected in Croatia, 79% of them being collected by the Croatian Red Cross (HCK) with the assistance of volunteers and in cooperation with transfusion services, and 21% by the institute of transfusion, and this was sufficient blood for the country's requirements, HCK said on Friday, ahead of Blood Donor Day, October 25.

Donors are in the majority men (66%), while 34% are women. There are around 170,000 blood donors registered with the HCK in Croatia. HCK organises various award ceremonies for donors and 167 men will receive special recognition for donating their blood 100 times as will 9 women who donated blood 75 times.  

The first blood donor event in Croatia organised by the HCK was held in Sisak on 25 October 1953. Since then, HCK regularly organises blood donor events in cooperation with transfusion services.
