Leko: No reason for nervousness in anticipation of new parliament

Parliament Speaker Josip Leko said on Tuesday that he expected the inaugural session of the new parliament to be held in an orderly manner and in accordance with the Constitution and the parliament's rule book, and that he would insist on those rules as had always done.

Leko will chair the first convention of the eighth parliament on Thursday until the appointment of the new speaker, which will mark the inauguration of the new, eighth legislature.

There is no reason for any nervousness, all of this makes up democracy, Leko told the press in the parliament.

Leko declined to reveal whether he would be the Social Democratic Party's candidate for speaker of the new parliament.

"I have not been involved in negotiations (on a post-election coalition) and am not familiar with how far the negotiations have advanced," Leko said.

He declined to answer the question whether he would accept a possible offer to be the speaker of the next parliament. He said that he had not been informed about any potential candidates for the next parliament president.

"We have not had such a situation before in which parliament is being convened although a majority has not been formed," Leko said.

If the new parliament is not constituted, we will adjourn the session and reconvene it as soon as political stakeholders say that they have a majority required to form a government, Leko said.
