Milanovic: Croatia needs a stable government

After the State Election Commission released preliminary results of the September 11 early parliamentary election at midnight, Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic early on Monday morning addressed his party's members and supporters, repeating several times in his address that Croatia needed a stable government and that the situation would be clearer in the morning after all ballots were counted.

"I thank all who went to the polls and supported us. Ballots are still being counted, the competition is fierce and the outcome will be tight. This was not a happy day for Croatia, we witnessed a futile experiment in the past eight months," said Milanovic.

"Croatia needs a stable government, we do not know at the moment which government that will be. We are available and we all need to put aside our personal ambitions and vanity and put ourselves at the service of the state because the situation of the past eight months cannot continue," Milanovic said, reiterating that the country needed a stable government and thanking his partners and voters.

"Unfortunately, the turnout was very low and now is the time to ask ourselves to what extent we are responsible for that and to what extent that is down to us," Milanovic said, adding that the turnout was 10 percentage points lower than at the previous election.

Over the past eight months, we had an unstable and destructive government, we did our best to motivate voters, but obviously we could have done better, Milanovic said.
