Milanovic looks set to step down as SDP chief

The president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Zoran Milanovic will address the public at a news conference scheduled for 1400 hrs and it is expected that he will announce that he would no longer be at the helm of the party.

Sources close to Milanovic confirmed for Hina information first released by the Novi List daily that Milanovic no longer planned to lead the party. Hina learnt that the SDP leadership discussed this on Sunday evening, after the announcement of election results according to which SDP won 54 seats in the 151-seat parliament, namely seven seats fewer than its biggest opponent - the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) - which means the SDP had lost the opportunity to form a new government.

Milanovic told his associates he no longer planned to lead the party and the source in the SDP presidency did not know if Milanovic would resign as early as today and let his deputy Ranko Ostojic organise intra-party elections, or if he would announce that he did not plan to run for party president again.

Under its statute, the SDP holds intra-party election after each parliamentary election, within 150 days at the latest.

The SDP expects the new party leadership to be elected by December and Tonino PIcula, Sinisa Hajdas-Doncic and Ranko Ostojic are mentioned as possible candidates for the position of party chief.

Milanovic has been at the helm of the SDP since 2007, however the party has not won elections since 2011.
