Mine clearance workers sign collective agreement

Union representatives of the Mungos mine clearance workers on Wednesday signed a collective agreement in the presence of Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic and Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic, thus officially ending their strike.

Mine clearance workers managed to negotiate a pay rise from HRK 13,000 to HRK 15,000 gross per month and 0.5% bonus for each year of seniority.

Mungos workers were on strike from July 5 - 8, after collective negotiations were disrupted and after an unsuccessful attempt in peaceful settlement and the rejection of their demand for a pay rise.

After the signing ceremony on Wednesday, union representative Mario Ivekovic said that he hoped that a branch collective agreement would be signed soon for all mine clearance workers in private companies.

"They all deserve the conditions we have negotiated for Munogs workers," Ivekovic said, adding that he hoped Oreskovic and Orepic would keep their promise and assist in the branch negotiations.

Prime Minister Oreskovic expressed his satisfaction with the signing of the collective agreement and commended mine clearance workers, "men who put their lives in danger every day to clear Croatia of mines."

He announced that the government would support other mine clearance companies in preparing a branch collective agreement.
