Minister: Delays in adoption of legislation not worrying

Delays in the adoption of laws should not be a cause for concern, the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butkovic, said on Tuesday when asked by reporters why Croatia had not implemented by April 18 European directives on public procurement and the award of concessions and if it would be penalised because of that.

"A public procurement law, which is within the jurisdiction of the Economy Ministry, will be on the government's agenda next week, and a law on concessions, which is within the jurisdiction of the Finance Ministry, will be adopted by the summer recess and there won't be any penalties," Butkovic told reporters during a visit to Varazdin.

The political party "Pametno" ("Smart") has warned that Croatia failed to incorporate three European Union directives on concessions and public procurement by 18 April this year, which was why it was facing penalties from the European Commission.

The party said that the directives in question were Directive 2014/23/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 February 2014 on the award of concession contracts, Directive 2014/24/EU on public procurement and Directive 2014/25/EU on procurement by entities operating in the water, energy, transport and postal services sectors.
