Minister says case of police headquarters break-in solved

Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic on Friday said that the resolution of the case of stolen gold and cash from a safe in police headquarters showed that the Croatian police was among the most efficient in Europe.

"A police official was arrested on Friday morning suspected of abuse of power," Orepic told reporters but he stopped short of confirming that the officer arrested is recently replaced head of the Zagreb precinct organised crime unit, Zeljko Dolacki, whose office was burglarised.

"The arrested official," according to Orepic is the only suspect for now. Orepic did not say whether the suspect had admitted to the crime and whether the stolen goods have been recovered.

"A police official was arrested in his home and taken in and proceedings are underway," Orepic said, adding that that was all he could say for the time being.

Congratulating the "entire structure" that worked on that case, Minister Orepic said that this confirms statistics which indicated that Croatia's police are among the most efficient in Europe.

Dolacki is suspected of taking and retaining two kilogrammes of gold and 280,000 euro, temporarily confiscated during a crime investigation and of falsely reporting the burglary, the Interior Ministry reported on its web site without naming the suspect but citing his age.

Once the police have completed their investigation the suspect will be taken to the State Prosecutor's Office (USKOK) for questioning.

The robbery at the Zagreb Criminal Investigation Department that occurred in the night between April 3 and 4 was the reason for the resignations offered by Chief Police Director Vlado Dominic, the head of the Zagreb police directorate, Goran Burisic, and another two senior police officials in Zagreb, and for the suspension of police official Zeljko Dolacki.
