Minister says Croatia will form engineering unit for UN missions

Defence Minister Josip Buljevic, who is attending a UN Peacekeeping Defence Ministerial in London September 7 and 8, said on Thursday Croatia would soon form an engineering unit to take part in UN peace-keeping missions.

At last year's UN General Assembly the question of stronger engagement in peace operations was raised, Buljevic told Hina. That initiative was launched by US President Barack Obama and Croatia, that is, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic responded to Obama's call, Buljevic added.

The engineering unit will participate in one of the peace missions, he added without specifying which mission that might be.

The conference in London is dedicated to stepping up global efforts in peace keeping missions, in the fight against sexual violence and to strengthening the role of women in peace operations, he added.

Croatian troops have participated in UN missions since September 1999. Currently Croatian troops are engaged in three operations: UNFIL in Lebanon, UNMOGIP in India and Pakistan and MINURSO in the Western Sahara.
