Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic has dissolved the Non-Profit Media Commission in line with his powers, the ministry said in a press release on Friday.
The press release, forwarded to Hina, cited the relevant regulations that empower the Culture Minister to appoint and dissolve commissions which have been set up in accordance with the said regulations.
However, the minister's decision has angered some of the members of the seven-member council, with one of them claiming that Hasanbegovic made the decision under the influence of some activists of the "In the Name of the Family" association.
In addition, the Croatian Journalists' Association (HND), the Croatian PEN centre and the NGO Platform 112, on Friday morning criticised the new minister for his plan to redistribute funds intended for non-profit media and accused him of incompetence, reiterating their appeal to the government to relieve Hasanbegovic of duty.
The funds earmarked for non-profit media will be given to those whom Hasanbegovic finds to be good, said HND leader Sasa Lekovic.
The chairwoman of the parliamentary education, science and culture committee, Gordana Rusak, decided on Friday to convene a meeting of the committee for Monday, adding that she would invite Hasanbegovic to explain his decision on the dissolution of the seven-member Non-Profit Media Commission.
Rusak told journalists in the parliament that she had learned about Hasanbegovic's decision from the media.
She said that the parliamentary committee could not rescind the minister's decision but could discuss the situation and take a position.
The deputy chairwoman of the parliamentary education, science and culture committee, Sabina Glasovac of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), said that the Opposition members of that committee as well as of the parliamentary committee on media had requested the two committees' joint meeting to discuss the latest developments.
On the other hand, Andrija Mikulic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), who chairs the parliamentary media committee, said today that he did not see any reason for such a meeting.
The minister has acted in accordance with his legal powers, Mikulic said.
