Minority MP: We agreed to support Plenkovic as PM-designate

The representative of the Hungarian minority in the Croatian parliament, Robert Jankovics, said on Friday that the national minorities had agreed to support Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Andrej Plenkovic as the future prime minister-designate, underscoring that minorities needed to be an element of stability in the country.

"We, future members of the minority group in parliament, all eight of us, have agreed to support Andrej Plenkovic as the prime minister-designate who, luckily for Croatia, has a normal, pro-European approach and I think that we will fare well with him," Jankovics told reporters after a meeting between national minority representatives and HDZ officials.

Asked whether the minorities had set any conditions to support the ruling majority, Jankovics said that the situation in the country was too serious to be setting any conditions. He explained that they had discussed the terms that would be part of an agreement and which they would like to be part of the government's platform.

"We consider that the national minorities need to be an element of stability in the country and we will do everything in the next four years that we and our potential partners retain a stable government for the benefit of all citizens of this county, including the national minorities," he underscored.

He considers that it is important for members of national minorities to remain united because this is a difficult time for the country.
