Nearly 300,000 pass through Croata since start of refugee crisis

A total of  297.526 refugees and migrants have entered Croatia since mid-September, when the migrant crisis spilled over to Croatia, as a result of Hungary's decision to seal its border with Serbia, and 2,389 arrivals were registered from Saturday midnight to 9 am Sunday, said the spokesman for the Vukovar-Srijem police district, Domagoj Dzigumovic.

On Sunday morning , the eastern Croatian reception centre at Opatovac catered for 2,000 migrants and refugees.

According to the police spokesman, Croatia is prepared for handling the continued influx of migrants and refugees fleeing wars and poverty in the Middle East and Africa who are passing through Croatia on their way to western and northern European countries.

Next week, the winter reception centre in the eastern city of Slavonski Brod will start operating.
