New leader says HSS won't be engaged in political trade-off any longer

Croatian Peasant Party leader Kreso Beljak, who was recently elected to succeed Branko Hrg at the helm of this junior partner in the ruling coalition, has said in an interview with Hina that the HSS will propose a new territorial organisation of Croatia and that the party will no longer be engaged in "political trade-offs".

Beljak, the mayor of Samobor, a town west of Zagreb, has said that HSS mayors of cities and municipalities would be added to the party's Main Committee.

"We want to be a party that caters for the interests of the Croatian population and to offer a programme for the survival of our settlements and population, notably in rural areas," Beljak said, among other things, in the interview published on Sunday.

Beljak has promised that by this summer the HSS will put forward legislative proposals for real reforms which, he said, have not yet happened.

The HSS is a junior partner in the Croatian Democratic Union-led (HDZ) Patriotic Coalition, that makes up the government together with the Bridge reformist party, and according to Beljak, coalitions with other political options are possible in local elections which depends on HSS local branches.
