New parliament to hold inauguaral meeting Monday

Croatia's new, eighth parliament is scheduled to hold its inaugural meeting at noon Monday, after this past Wednesday President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic nominated a non-partisan candidate Tihomir Oreskovic as the Prime Minister-Designate and on that occasion she convened the first session of the new 151-seat legislature for 28 December.

This will be the second attempt of the inaugural session after the first attempt failed on 3 December, when the only one candidate for the parliament speaker, Robert Podolnjak, did not accede to be the speaker as he had not been given cross-party support while Bridge, Podolnjak's slate, had insisted on agreement of all major parties and bloc in the Sabor.

After Bridge, an association of slates of independent candidate that emerged third in the November 8 election, and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)-led "Patriotic Coalition", that won 59 seats, finally agreed to propose Oreskovic as the PM-Designate, the next step in the developments is the establishment of the new parliament.

According to some announcements, the HDZ coalition and Bridge, which has now 15 seats, will propose HDZ senior official Zeljko Reiner for the post of parliament speaker, and the appointment of parliament chairman is the main prerequisite for the establishment of the legislature.

It remains to be seen who will be proposed by the Social Democratic Party (SDP)-led "Croatia Is Growing" coalition, that won 56 seats. The SDP leadership and elected deputies are expected to hold a meeting on this topic in Zagreb on Sunday afternoon.
