"New Security Challenges for Europe" conference starts

An international conference on new security challenges for Europe, organised by the Centre for Security Cooperation RACVIAC, started in Zagreb's western suburb of Rakitje on Wednesday.

The conference brought together participants from Southeast Europe and Germany to discuss security challenges faced by Europe, notably its southeast, in the context of the migration crisis and last Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris.

International cooperation and the defence of shared European values were the main topics at the opening of the event, which will also focus on the current EU security strategy, notably in the light of an increased intensity of uncontrolled migration flows and the ways this process influences the level of terrorism threat on the European continent and outside of it.

The two-day conference was organised by RACVIAC in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Foundation and the Croatian association of graduates from the George C. Marshall Centre.

Opening the event, RACVIAC director Haydar Berk stressed terrorism in Europe cannot be defeated without international cooperation.

The meeting was also addressed by the Croatian President's envoy, Brigadier General Gordana Garasic.
