Number of building permits issued in Croatia up 31.4 pct y-o-y

According to the State Bureau of Statistics (DZS), 636 building permits were issued in June, which is an increase of 31.4% compared to June 2015.

Of the 636 permits issued, 449 or 71% were for new construction projects while 187 permits (29%) were for reconstruction or adaptations of existing buildings.

The value of construction work envisaged by the permits issued in June is estimated at HRK 1.65 billion.

The DZS reported that 3,624 building permits were issued in H1, which is an increase of 22.8% on the year. The value of works envisaged by permits issued in H1 was HRK 8.7 billion.

The Croatian Chamber of Commerce (HGK) has said that the continuing growth of the number of building permits issued suggests the possible continuation of recovery in the construction industry, however, that possibility is still not definite given the low value of works planned, which is lower than in the past two years.

That value could increase if the Peljesac bridge project is to continue in the second half of the year, the HGK said, adding that the continuation of recovery in the construction industry depended on economic growth and investments in both the public and private sectors as well as on stronger absorption of available funds from the European Union.
