Orepic confirms Bertina relieved as PNUSKOK chief

Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic confirmed on Tuesday that he had relieved Mario Bertina of his duties as director of the police anti-corruption office PNUSKOK, dismissing speculation that he did it under pressure from the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party.

Orepic said he relieved Bertina as part of "a swift reorganisation and overall organisation of the Interior Ministry."

He dismissed speculation that he relieved Bertina under pressure from the HDZ. "No pressure. I have already announced swift steps towards a reorganisation of the whole system. There will be more (replacements). I want to adapt the system and the people to what we aspire to. Definitely no pressure."

Some media reported today that Orepic had replaced Bertina, whom some political circles criticised for alleged unlawful activities in the use of special police measures.
