Orepic urges Pupovac not to discuss issue of false residence registration outside its main context

Minister of the Interior Vlaho Orepic on Sunday called on Serb National Council (SNV) president Milorad Pupovac not to discuss the issue of false residence registrations outside its main context and particularly not in the context of inter-ethnic relations.

"Mr Pupovac, we held talks on several occasions and I believe that it should be clear to you that I do not intend to mislead the public or deal with Cyrillic in Vukovar," Orepic said in response to an open letter Pupovac sent him on Saturday in which he criticised the minister for his statements regarding the manipulation of residence registrations by members of the Serb minority in Vukovar and for saying that when false registrations were removed, "there will no longer be any grounds for the use of the Cyrillic script (in Vukovar)."

Orepic said that by tackling the issue of false residence registrations he was not interfering in elections in Vrgorac even though socially irresponsible political parties were trying to imply that.

"I am only doing my job unlike many others who have not been doing it so far. Among them, apart from my predecessors, are also you and all the other members of Parliament who did not feel the political need and lacked determination to point to the proportions of this problem and then deal with it," Orepic wrote on his Facebook account.

He went on to say that he was aware of the political consequences the settlement of that problem would have and that somewhere this would mean changes in the ruling political structures and that somewhere else it would mean the cancellation of individuals' financial benefits or would affect minority rights and the rights and obligations of political and other groups.

"I therefore call on you as well as all those participating in Croatia's public and political life not to discuss the problem of false residence registrations outside its main context, and especially not to put it in the context of inter-ethnic relations, which I consider extremely irresponsible and unfounded," he said.

"Residence registration has been manipulated by many and it is time to put an end to it," Orepic said.
