Oreskovic: Croatia's position on Serbia's EU entry talks hasn't changed

Croatia's caretaker Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said in Brussels on Tuesday evening that Croatia's position on the opening of the policy chapter No. 23 in Serbia's EU entry talks had not changed and that what Croatia insisted on was also insisted on by other member-countries.

"As far as we are concerned, nothing has changed. We want Serbia to meet the same conditions Croatia and other members had to meet," Oreskovic said, adding that Croatia insisted on three conditions - jurisdiction for war crimes trials, protection of minorities and cooperation with the UN war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

"Other member countries, too, insist that those criteria be met," he said.

The Dutch EU Presidency planned to open talks with Serbia on the policy areas No. 23 and No. 24 before the expiry of its term at midnight, June 30, however, there is still no consensus on a common position within the EU on the policy area No. 23, which concerns judiciary and fundamental rights.

Croatian Foreign Minister Miro Kovac said on Monday that according to information available to Croatian negotiators, an agreement was close at hand and that it would be possible to open negotiations if Croatia's conditions were met.
