Osijek County head acquitted of abuse of office

The Osijek County Court on Friday acquitted pending appeal Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Vladimir Sisljagic and ex-County Development Agency head Martin Marolin of abuse of office and defrauding the county budget of over 120,000 kuna (16,000 euros).

The Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime contended that in 2011 and 2012 Sisljagic and Marolin, with the assistance of former county legislature chairman Zlatko Maksimovic, demanded that companies which were awarded grants by the county authorities pay them back 80 per cent of the allocated amounts.

Maksimovic pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting in the abuse of office at a preliminary hearing in February and was given a suspended 11-month sentence on the condition that he would not commit a criminal offence in the next two years.
