After its inauguration on Friday afternoon, the Croatian parliament continued its session into the evening and was expected by the end of the day to adopt amendments that would enable the formation of the new government.
The new government is expected to be formed on Tuesday or Wednesday. It will be formed on the basis of four bills that will amend the law on the obligations and rights of state officials, the law on the state administration system, the law on the structure and scope of activity of the ministries and other central bodies of state administration, and the law on the government.
All the bills have been put forward by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).
Under the proposed bills, the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Crafts would be merged with the Ministry of Economy, while the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection would take charge of the energy department from the Ministry of Economy and the water management department from the Ministry of Agriculture.
The number of ministries would be reduced from 20 to 19, and a new Ministry of Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy would be set up. The number of central state offices would be increased from four to six. Deputy ministers would be replaced by state secretaries.
