Parliament speaker says south refugee route in Croatia unrealistic

Parliament Speaker Zeljko Reiner dismissed on Saturday the possibility of a south route opening in Croatia for refugees and migrants from the Middle East and North Africa en route to Western Europe.

"It's not realistic to expect the opening of any other route because there are no elements" for that, he told reporters in Split.

He said more than 600,000 migrants had passed through Croatia and that only 170 had requested asylum. "That means that Croatia isn't their final destination, countries like Germany or Scandinavia are."

Asked what he thought of Vesna Pusic's candidacy for UN secretary-general, Reiner said she "nominated herself for that position through the media. After that, at the last minute, the outgoing Zoran Milanovic Cabinet supported her and based on the support of that government she is now campaigning as a UN secretary-general candidate."

As for Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic's support for Pusic's candidacy, Reiner said, "I read that Prime Minister Oreskovic allegedly supports that."

He also voiced hope that the strongest opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP), after intra-party elections, would be a "courteous opposition" constructively participating in making life better for Croatian citizens. "Croatian citizens no longer wish to listen to stories about Chetniks, Partizans, Ustashas and everything to which (the SDP) is, unfortunately, diverting discussions. Croatian citizens want to live better."
