Parliament unanimous about naming 2016 Year of Nikola Subic Zrinski

Clubs of deputies in the Croatian parliament on Friday unanimously supported a proposal by the Committee for Education, Science and Culture that 2016 be named Year of Nikola Subic Zrinski, the great military leader who 450 years ago led the defence of Szigeth from the Ottoman army, with MPs also recalling the obligation of the city of Zagreb, dating back to the 17th century, to erect a monument in his honour in its Zrinjevac park.

The 450th anniversary of the Battle of Szigeth will be commemorated in Croatia as well as in Hungary with a number of events held under the auspices of Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, her Hungarian counterpart Janos Ader and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

There was no usual parliamentary vote today and Speaker Zeljko Reiner said that the parliament would take a vote at 11 am on Monday on confidence in new War Veterans Minister Tomo Medved, as well as on the budget proposal for this year and its amendments and on items discussed so far.
