Parliamentary committee shortlists 10 nominees for constitutional court judges

The parliamentary Constitution Committee on Friday shortlisted ten nominees for Constitutional Court judges, proposing that parliament appoint them.

Zagreb Administrative Court president Andrej Abramovic, attorneys Lovorka Kusan and Miroslav Sumanovic, Supreme Court judge Branko Brkic and constitutional judge Mario Jelusic were shortlisted unanimously.

Constitution Committee members Josip Leko (opposition SDP), Davorin Mlakar (ruling HDZ) and attorney Rajko Mlinaric each received eight votes of the committee's nine members. Constitutional judge Snjezana Bagic and MP Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic (SDP) each received seven.

After the vote, Milorad Pupovac of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (opposition SDSS) said the parliamentary parties which negotiated the nominations did not abide by the constitutional law on the Constitutional Court.

"In the Constitutional Court we will have four attorneys, four politicians, one administrative judge and two with experience as judges. There are no professors, no constitutional law experts, apart from our colleague Jelusic. We had a chance to agree, but we agreed contrary to the highest criteria. Now we have a chance to fix that at the vote," he said, adding that the criteria which prevailed "show that we are not willing to strengthen our institutions and make them independent of us."

Parliament is expected to vote on the nominees at noon.
