Petrov: HSS decision to back Plenkovic won't change Bridge-HDZ relationship

The leader of the Bridge party, Bozo Petrov, said on Wednesday that the decision by the presidency of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) that their five members of Parliament would support Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Andrej Plenkovic as prime minister-designate would not change the Bridge-HDZ relationship or the recently begun talks on government formation.

"Anyone can support the HDZ-Bridge government in Parliament, that cannot be banned. Whether the HSS will do so or not is their decision," Petrov wrote on his Facebook page.

He said that the primary interest of his party was to secure guarantees that would prove that the government could work in the interests of citizens so that Croatia would become more democratic and more socially sensitive.

"Anyone can support that, including the HSS, but by doing so Mr Beljak will certainly not stop Bridge," Petrov said.

HSS leader Kreso Beljak said on Tuesday that the party's presidency had decided that the five HSS MPs would support HDZ leader Plenkovic as prime minister-designate without asking anything in return.

"That's perhaps a practice that hasn't been seen here, but we are an opposition party which is giving Mr. Plenkovic 100 days to try and stabilise the Croatian government, after which he will no longer have our support," Beljak said.
