Petrov: I never discussed candidate for veterans minister with Karamarko

Deputy Prime Minister Bozo Petrov said on Tuesday he did not know whether Milijan Brkic was the Patriotic Coalition's candidate for the Minister of Veterans' Affairs, because he had not yet discussed it with Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Tomislav Karamarko.

"At this point I cannot say whether Mr Brkic is a candidate for the Minister of Veterans' Affairs. I did not know that he has announced it in public. As for the candidates for this post, I hope this issue will be addressed this week," Petrov told a press conference at government headquarters.

He said he had not discussed this issue with Karamarko and that the selection of the Minister of Veterans' Affairs would be conducted in the same way the other ministers had been selected.

Petrov denied speculation that in the Office of the President he had been shown footage of members of Parliament from his Bridge party entering the government headquarters for negotiations on the formation of government with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which the media said was the reason why he had broken off talks with the SDP-led coalition.

Petrov said he had found out about the secret talks before his meeting with the President and that was the reason why he was upset in the President's Office. "There was absolutely no footage there. Had I been caught on camera while entering the building, you would have seen that I came upset and the meeting lasted five minutes."

Petrov said that no one had ever shown him footage of that meeting.

When asked if Croatia now had two governments, Petrov said: "No, Croatia has one government."
