Petrov, Maric dismiss criticism against gov'ts proposal to strip ex-president of office

The Deputy Prime Minister and Bridge party leader, Bozo Petrov, has said that it is untrue that the government's proposal to rescind some of the entitlements of former President Stipe Mesic is actually an act of the cabinet's confrontation with non like-minded people.

"I wouldn't call it the confrontation with non like-minded people," Petrov told reporters in Zagreb on Wednesday.

The government is expected to put forward the decision to rescind the Office of former President Stjepan Mesic, explaining this as a austerity measure.

Finance Minister Zdravko Maric also dismissed criticism that the decision was actually demagogic.

The government will propose the revocation of Mesic's entitlements such as the right to have an office and to have a driver and an official car available due to "current economic conditions".

The amended legislation annulling Mesic's entitlements is to take effect on 1 June.

Petrov said that he could not see any reasons for the existence of the office of a former president.
