Petrov: participation fee in health sector won't go up

Deputy Prime Minister Bozo Petrov of the Bridge party said on Wednesday there would be no increase of the participation fee in the health sector, adding that the HRK 19 increase of the supplementary health insurance was necessary to stabilise the system.

Petrov said that media announcements regarding the HRK 10 increase to HRK 15 were mere insinuations. He added, however, that the government had carefully thought it through by how much it needed to raise the amount of the supplementary health insurance.

Nobody in the government was happy about it, but if we want to keep the system stable and if we want to foster solidarity in our society for the sake of all those who cannot afford the supplementary health insurance, we must raise it by 19 kuna, Petrov said. There will be no other increases, he underscored, expressing hope that some other measures would lead to a reduction of the overall cost of living.

Asked about resignations and dismissals in the police following this week's heist of the Zagreb central police precinct, Petrov said that "people who are responsible and who hold positions need to take responsibility." "I always have a problem with the fact that this must be done following the principle of command responsibility, because sometimes the person in command is not responsible. On the other hand, until the culprit is found, this is the only measure that can be taken," he added.
