Plenkovic and Petrov say compromise deal on new gov't reached

The leaders of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Bridge party, Andrej Plenkovic and Bozo Petrov, on Friday confirmed that the two parties had reached a compromise agreement on all vital issues concerning the work of the future government.

The HDZ chief said in the national parliament today that he expected a stable parliamentary majority and a stable government in the next four years that would work in line with the support gained from the voters in the September 11 snap election.

He confirmed that the two parties had hammered an agreement on rotation in the post of Parliament Speaker.

Under the agreement, Petrov will be the parliament chairman in the first two years of the term of the ninth legislature, and will be succeeded by an HDZ official in the last two years.

Asked by the press whether Croatia would get the new Prime Minister next Friday, Plenkovic recalled that the inaugural session of the new parliament was scheduled for 14 October and "a certain number of decisions should be made in a timely fashion, so we will see."

As for the agreement between the two parties, the Bridge leader Petrov said that the "HDZ has recognised our seven conditions which we have put forward. I hope that they will incorporate them into the government's agenda."
