Plenkovic condemns 'acts of provocation' in Knin

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) president Andrej Plenkovic on Saturday condemned "all the acts of provocation in Knin" yesterday during the 21st anniversary of Operation Storm and dismissed claims that President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic had become involved in the election campaign.

Speaking to reporters in Dubrovnik, Plenkovic reiterated that the president's address at the anniversary celebration had been appropriate to the occasion. "No message was contentious," he said, adding that left-wing politicians "are trying to insinuate that she is helping in the election campaign. The campaign hasn't started and her address was good, appropriate and statesmanly."

Asked if the HDZ condemned the Ustasha salutes and songs which could be heard in Knin yesterday, Plenkovic said the HDZ condemned "all acts of provocation... The HDZ has always condemned all acts of provocation when we celebrate the most important day in modern history, Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and Croatian Veterans Day (Aug 5). Any kind of provocation on that day is not aimed at Croatia's stability or conducive to good neighbourly cooperation."

Plenkovic said the burning of the Serbian flag in Knin yesterday.
