Plenkovic: Croatia to be active in EU foreign policy

Croatia will be an active member of the European Union, Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader and member of the European Parliament Andrej Plenkovic said on Wednesday evening in Strasbourg after talks with the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine, Andriy Parubiy.

"We are an EU member, we will be active. I think there are very many topics on the agenda that may pose threats both in terms of foreign policy and in terms of security: the refugee and migrant crisis, many terror threats to EU members, relations with Russia in the context of our Eastern Partnership policy, and the very unstable situation in the Mediterranean and in the Middle East," Plenkovic told Hina, adding that Croatia should give its contribution to efforts to address those topics.

Commenting on his talks with Parubiy, Plenkovic, who chairs the EP's Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee, said that Croatia's experience from peaceful reintegration of its formerly occupied areas could be helpful to Ukraine regarding the situation in the occupied areas of Donetsk and Lugansk, and in the unlawfully annexed Crimea.

Plenkovic said that the EU had its role in broader diplomatic processes, notably regarding the current crises in Syria, Iraq and northern African countries, which, he added, were a priority for the EU, as well as in efforts to seek solutions for the future relations with Russia.

By pursuing its current policy Russia has definitely destabilised the kind of partnership which the EU wanted to develop 10 years ago, he said.
