Plenkovic: Gov't formation as planned

Commenting on his decision to appoint Goran Maric of the HDZ a minister without a portfolio, Prime Minister Designate and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) chief Andrej Plenkovic said on Wednesday that "everything is proceeding according to plan", while Maric briefly told the press: "I am not a minister without a portfolio."

"Everything has happened as planned. He will be in charge of coordination between central state offices and agencies," Plenkovic told the press ahead of a joint session of the parliamentary benches of the HDZ and the Bridge party.

Asked to comment on media headlines that Maric claimed on Tuesday he did not want to be a minister without a portfolio and that he was asking a guarantee that a new ministry would be formed in the near future, Plenkovic said: "Goran Maric will today be given a vote of confidence, just as other members of the government, as a minister in the government in charge of a very important job, for the overall functioning of the government and removing deficiencies we've noticed earlier."

Plenkovic refuted claims that the appointment of Nina Obuljen as the new culture minister had been met with problems.

Asked if he had disappointed some HDZ members and voters with his choice for the culture minister, Plenkovic said there was room for everyone in the HDZ, including former culture minister Zlatko Hasenbegovic. He said that as president of the HDZ and PM designate, it was his right to appoint his team.
