Plenkovic, Petrov believe they could hammer out deal by next week

The leader of the Bridge party, Bozo Petrov, and Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) chief Andrej Plenkovic on Monday expressed satisfaction with a round of negotiations held today as well as hope that next week the president of the republic could give them the mandate to form a government.

"We held talks in line with a road map that was agreed last week. Our colleagues discussed today also details of the future government's platform. As for the composition of the new government, I believe that we are gradually bringing our positions closer. It is our aim to form, in agreement with Bridge, a stable parliamentary majority," Plenkovic told reporters at a news conference in Bridge's offices where the fourth round of talks was held.

Plenkovic expressed confidence that by Monday at the latest, when a new round of consultations is to take place at the Office of the President, he would have the signatures of a sufficient number of MPs to be given, by President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, the mandate to form the government.

"We are very much satisfied with the course of the meeting and with what we have agreed. We discussed the government's make-up and some proposals put forward by both sides. Talks will continue throughout this week and I believe that they should be completed in a week," said Petrov.

The HDZ won 61 seats in parliament in the September 11 early parliamentary election, while the Bridge reformist party ranked third with 13 seats. The inaugural session of the ninth legislature is set for 14 October.
