Plenkovic requests detailed report on financing of HDZ activities

A candidate for the position of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) chief, Andrej Plenkovic, has asked party secretary general Domagoj Ivan Milosevic to submit a detailed report about the financing of party activities, following statements by the owner of the Prvo Plinsko Drustvo (PPD) gas company, Pavao Vujnovac, that he lent HRK 4.2 million to the HDZ, Plenkovic's campaign headquarters said in a statement Tuesday.

"Following media inquiries about Pavao Vujnovac's statement ... candidate for the position of the HDZ president Andrej Plenkovic has requested the secretary general to submit a detailed report on the financing of party activities. In his election platform, Andrej Plenkovic advocates transparent work and financing of all party bodies and responsibility of individuals performing party duties," read the statement, signed by spokesman for Plenkovic's campaign Davor Stier.

The HDZ reported on Tuesday that in 2014 and 2015 it had taken short-term loans from the PPD gas company in accordance with the existing legal regulations and the HDZ Financial Statute, in an entirely transparent fashion and with the knowledge of the then party chief Tomislav Karamarko. The HDZ also said that the loans were used to finance the party's business operations, the 2014 election campaign for the European Parliament and the 2014-2015 presidential election.

The Nacional weekly ran an article in its latest issue saying that PPD owner Pavao Vujnovac asked the HDZ several days ago to pay back HRK 4.2 million which he had given the party as a loan at the direct request of the then HDZ secretary general Milijan Brkic who today serves as HDZ deputy chief. Nacional quoted an unnamed HDZ member as saying that Brkic took the loans without the knowledge of the HDZ presidency.
