Plenkovic says has enough time for negotiations, all to be completed within deadlines

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) chief Andrej Plenkovic said on Friday that negotiations on forming a new government would be successfully completed within constitutional deadlines that would start running on Monday, after the announcement of official election results.

Plenkovic told reporters outside the HDZ headquarters that negotiations were proceeding well and when asked if he would have enough signatures to be named prime minister designate by his meeting with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, scheduled for next week, he said: "We shall see. That isn't critical, we have enough time because the official election results will be announced on Monday, which is when the deadlines will start running."

He underscored that all negotiations held so far were aimed at identifying the positions of the HDZ and its partners and that everything was proceeding well.

Asked to comment on speculation that the Bridge party, which won 13 seats in the parliament in the September 11 election, would present the 15th member of its club of deputies and whether or not this would strengthen Bridge's position in the negotiations, Plenkovic said he was happy to see that Bridge could agree on post-election cooperation, underscoring that the HDZ was not trying to recruit deputies from other parties or clubs of deputies.

"With 61 seats in parliament we are a convincing relative winner of the parliamentary election and we have several other deputies in parliament ready to support us. The more stable the parliamentary majority, the more stable and efficient the government," he said.
