Plenkovic says HDZ considering running in elections alone

The candidate for the position of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) chief, Andrej Plenkovic, said on Wednesday the HDZ was considering running in the coming parliamentary election independently, saying he would discuss this idea with members of the party presidency after he, as the only candidate running, was confirmed as party chief.

"I believe in the HDZ as the strongest political force, we are considering a possibility of running independently. I will discuss this with colleagues in the party presidency and with all relevant bodies and the public will be informed of our decisions in time," Plenkovic told Nova TV.

Commenting on Opposition's criticism that his arrival at the helm of the HDZ was only a cosmetic change because the party would stay the same, Plenkovic said there has been a lot of panic among the Opposition ever since he announced he was running for party chief.

Asked if the HDZ could keep the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) as a coalition partner, Plenkovic recalled that the HDZ and the HSS were part of the same political family, the European People's Party, adding that he hoped the two parties would run together at the parliamentary election.

He also announced talks with all partners, including the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP AS), saying that after that the HDZ would decide what is the best for the party in present circumstances.

Asked if he received a detailed report about the HDZ financing from party secretary general Domagoj Ivan Milosevic, which he requested in connection with a HRK 4.2 million loan the party took from the Prvo Plinarsko Drustvo gas company, Plenkovic said he expected Milosevic to do that as soon as possible.
