Plenkovic says negotiations with Bridge, other parties begin

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader Andrej Plenkovic said that he was beginning on Tuesday talks on government formation with the Bridge party and other parties that entered the parliament in Sunday's early election, dismissing reports that he was in touch with the leaders of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), members of the SDP-led People's Coalition.

"The HDZ National Council met yesterday and agreed on a negotiating platform. Talks with Bridge and other parties start today," Plenkovic told reporters outside the HDZ offices.

Asked if he had talked on the phone with Bridge leader Bozo Petrov before the elections, he said that they had not discussed post-election cooperation but other topics.

He also answered in the negative when asked if it was true that he was in contact with the leaders of the HNS and the HSS.

The HDZ National Council decided on Monday that the party's approach to talks on government formation should be based on its election platform, which focuses on the future, economy, competitiveness, jobs, demographic policy, social equity and the best possible integration of vulnerable groups into society.
