PM, ministers discuss Croat hooliganism at Euro 2016

Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic and some of the ministers from his caretaker government were discussing on Monday incidents caused by Croatian hooligans at the Euro 2016 tournament in France, and the meeting was also joined by Security and Intelligence Agency chief Daniel Markic.

Attending the meeting were Foreign Minister Miro Kovac, Minister of the Interior Vlaho Orepic, Justice Minister Ante Sprlje and Science, Education and Sports Minister Predrag Sustar.

Sustar was the only one willing to make a statement for the press as he arrived for the meeting.

Even though the current government is a caretaker government, it has the mechanisms to react against violence at sporting events and thus make the situation easier for the next government, said Sustar.

"We should act in a civilised manner. I believe that this government and the one to follow it will have enough methods and resources to 'separate the wheat from the chaff'. Every country in Europe had to do it, we have to do it too... It is good that the President and the PM have reacted and you can trust me, we will use our powers to the maximum," said Sustar.

He added that the enforcement of the Act on the Prevention of Violence at Sporting Events would have to be improved.

Asked by reporters about the Act on Sports, with which a part of football fans are dissatisfied, Sustar said he hoped that the law would be entirely re-written.

"I hope that any decision-making about it will be preceded by a public debate and that it will not be submitted to parliament for discussion under fast-track procedure," said Sustar, explaining that the fast-track parliamentary procedure was the reason for problems in the enforcement of the current Act on Sports.
