PM Oreskovic thanks citizens for support

Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic has thanked citizens for the support they have shown in the first public opinion poll since the new government was given a vote of confidence in parliament last Friday, adding that support of 63% of respondents obliges him to work on economic recovery and a more just society to justify that support.

Expressing gratitude for the support on his Facebook account on Monday, the prime minister also responded to criticism that his cabinet didn't have a programme and that his address to parliament last Friday was quite brief.

"Over the past few days, we could hear that the government doesn't have a programme. Some criticised that my presentation in parliament was not bound in a thick pile of paper. We live in a modern digital world and I wanted to show that with my presentation. Our aim is to increase and sustain growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to a level of at least three percent, reduce unemployment that won't be more than 14%, stop the galloping foreign debt and to balance the revenue and expenditure sides of the budget without introducing intervening taxes. All our measures will be adopted systematically and for the long-term. The business climate in Croatia has to become stable," the prime minister said in his post entitled, "Our programme is a happy Croatia."

According to a survey conducted by Ipsos for Nova TV on a sample of 601 adult Croatian citizens between January 22 & 23, a month after Oreskovic appearing on the political scene, 63% of those surveyed said they were satisfied and 32% said they were dissatisfied while 5% said they did not know. Asked whether Oreskovic would be better than his predecessor Zoran Milanovic, 53% of respondents said yes, 25% believe Oreskovic and Milanovic would be the same, and 17% thought he would be worse, while the remainder did not know.

Oreskovic's rating thus increased since 29 December when 56% of those surveyed were satisfied with the PM-Designate and 34% were unsatisfied and 11% did not know.

"This high percentage of support from citizens obliges me to justify that confidence. As it has been until now, in agreement with my deputy prime ministers and other ministers, I will do what I think is best for economic recovery and financial stability of the country and for a more just society," Oreskovic wrote on his Facebook account.
